STC rating comparison Firestik™ vs. Acoustical Caulk

STC performance of a fire rated wall assembly utilizing Firestik™ was determined through several comparison tests run in accordance with provisions and requirements of ASTM E90-04. NVLAP accredited labs have performed sound transmission loss tests on representative wall partitions providing results shown in reports available at www.firestik.us.

Results using the same partition mock-up provided STC measurements having the Head of Wall gap joint addressed differently in each test. Three individual results obtained are listed in the following reports:

  1. Report No TL06-256 – Head of Wall joint uncovered STC = 45
  2. Report No TL06-257 – Head of Wall joint with Firestik applied both sides STC = 52
  3. Report No TL06-258 – Head of Wall joint with acoustical sound caulk both sides STC = 53

The 8’ high x 12’ wide test partition mock up was representative of Gypsum Associations File No. WP1522. Performance of Firestik™ joint coverage is similar to improvement measured when an acoustical caulk is applied to address the same nominal Head of Wall gap. Lab measured results place both Firestik™ and acoustical caulk solutions in the range of 50 to 54 STC class rating referred to in the Gypsum Association reference manual.
