Firestik™ Design

The proprietary Firestik design provides fire stopping protection exceeding stringent UL 2079 test standards for Head of Wall (HOW) joints in fire rated partitions. Design benefits of the combination of intumescent and metal profiles provide superior movement and protection of fire resistive joints.

20ga metal profiles:
  • Galvanized .030 thick metal formed with a small corrugation or rib located on one leg
  • Flat portion of profiles allow entire profiles to be positively attached (via mechanical or friction fit fastener) to building structure.
  • Eliminates reliance upon surface adhesion and bond strength of mastic type protection.
Corrugation or rib:
  • Smooth rounded surface allows contact with wall without adversely affecting wall/sheathing during deflection
  • Protects intumescent from contact with wall eliminating fatigue or degradation of intumescent
  • Location and design of corrugation assures intumescent “held in place” at HOW joint during assembly life cycle.
  • Directs and holds in place “hard char” expansion of intumescent
Intumescent:
  • Cured 2mm thick material factory adhered to the metal profile
  • Expands at temperatures in excess of 300 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Becomes a “hard char” expanding in excess of 35 times original installed size
  • Fills HOW joint creating seal preventing passage of flame, heat, and smoke through joint.
  • Cured and odor free providing immediate protection
  • Active ingredients provide protection for either 1 or 2 hour rated joints

Installed in front of dynamic joints Firestik provides for 100% unencumbered movement of wall assemblies. The Firestik design requires no additional mineral wool or mastic type materials in the HOW gap that restrict the compression or extension capabilities of the joint.

The Firestik metal profile remains in place on both sides of fire rated partitions aiding to hold “flute fill” materials in place through UL 2079 cycle, burn, and hose stream testing requirements.
